CREATURES OF HABIT

Write a poem about something you do on a daily basis. Take the mundane and make it a memorable event. As is always the rule at micro poetry, 14 lines or less is your quest!

  1. MAKING WITH THE WAKEY-WAKEY

    Alarm calls, incessantly annoying,
a ploy to rob me of sleep. I creep
to my feet, taking a stand
    because mobility demands it.
    Trudge through the darkened pall
of a night gone quickly. Thick mucous,
eyes that fail to focus, the joke is
I'm still barely awake. I take that pause
because my bladder is as mad as a hatter.
Give Mr. Coffee the finger to flip him on,
power the radio and head for the couch.
As far as I'm concerned, until the beans
are brewed I'm dead until further notice!

Fortunately, my alarm call isn't annoying!

    2. Wish I could get my hands on one of them non-annoying alarms. Although, if I don not flip the alarm switch, it won't annoy me...

  3. Right Time to Write

Up at five, coffee on, set out cereal and bowl
Check my email, Face Book, news, prompts and blogs
Feed the dog, let him out, back in
Pack hubs lunch, coffee to go, kiss
Him goodbye, be safe, love you.
    Ahhh, second cup a’ joe
    Sit at the computer
    Think and mull
    Type, type
    Poem.

  5. I haven't been able to write until now and it is short enough to post here. I think it goes along with the prompt, but I wanted to share it here anyway.

    Another Day Without You

    Another day without you
    I glance across the bed
    and see your undented pillow
I know I will never hear your
    voice again telling me you
love me or see your smile
    as I enter a room
I know I will never feel
    your arms around me again
and I must live with the
    memories of all of this

    3. Barbara, this is beautiful. It's the everyday things we miss most, that's for sure. You are in my prayers, always.

  6. Barbara, I know how difficult it must be at this time, but if writing about it helps in any small way, then feel free to use this forum to express your heart. And yes this does fit the prompt. Sharing a life with someone is purely habitual. Hal's physical absence doesn't change the love you continue to share. Thank you for this piece.

    1. Walt, you're welcome. It came to me last night and I was grateful I was able to write. Before then nothing came to me, but I guess it was time to let out a little of how I feel to the world. Thank you for providing this forum. <3 And also thank you for the words of comfort you gave to me when I needed them most.

    2. You are most welcome. Little bits can lead to a torrent of emotion and words. You know what and when to release it. With you in spirit.

  7. Eyes before opening

before the first crack of light
there in the still dark of closed
    question marks float as squiggles
coalescing - "how old?" "how fat?"
    "what day" "what way?"
I answer each question - shake off
the image behind closed eyes and
with a deep hopeful re-invented breath
    open
    eyes

  8. Up-lift

    from his bedroom
    I lift the cat
    this former fluff
    of coal, that claimed
the rest of my years -
I lift him into my arms, cradled
against my breast and sit with him
for a moment or two, running fingers
through satin panther fur - and if - If
I am very lucky, he will purr - just this
side of inaudible - but enough to fill me with pleasure
and pride - in this quiet moment - of the only time he will
permit anyone, ever, to lift him into their arms and touch
    him

    first glance
    a dance
    too often
    between
    the
    expected
    and
    the
    image
    reflected
    before
    editing

  11. Nonet for Every AM

Arthritic hands tug the blind cord
    until daylight floods into
my room. I shake sleep from
    my unwilling eyes
    and stumble down-
    stairs; let dogs
    out, back
    in.
